Important: CGPA-to-Percentage Formula

There is no single universal CGPA-to-percentage formula for every Indian university or board. Many institutions publish their own official conversion method. The commonly used CBSE-style formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5, but students should use the formula prescribed by their institution for official applications.

Credit-weighted CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ Semester Credits

Common 9.5 conversion = CGPA × 9.5

Example

If your CGPA is 8.2 and your institution uses the 9.5 conversion factor, the calculated percentage is 77.90%.

STUDENT GUIDE

How to calculate CGPA

For a credit-weighted calculation, multiply each semester GPA by the credits for that semester, add the results, and divide by the total credits. If all semesters have equal credits, the result is the same as the simple average of semester GPAs.

CGPA vs SGPA

SGPA generally represents performance for one semester, while CGPA represents cumulative performance across multiple semesters. The exact definitions can vary by institution.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is CGPA calculated?

When credits differ between semesters, a credit-weighted calculation is generally appropriate: sum of GPA multiplied by credits divided by total credits.

How do I convert 8.2 CGPA to percentage?

Using the 9.5 conversion factor, 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.90%. Your institution may prescribe a different official formula.
